TEAM SPARTAN NETWORK

JUNE 2007 - NEWSLETTER # 07-30

TRAINING NEWS

MAY was a busy month for Team Spartan as we completed an action packed series of mobile training courses across the country. With the 2007 spring / summer training schedule in full swing now, we have started up our local outdoor training programs, which are hosted by the
Illinois State
Police – District 5 range in Lockport, Illinois and the Harvey
Police Department Range in Harvey, Illinois. Visit our Course Schedule page for more upcoming class information.

We finished up May with several world class presentations at the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors - 27th Annual Training Conference in San Antonio, Texas. If you missed this year’s conference, you missed the BEST firearms instructor training conference in the country!

The conference was sold out with over 450 instructors attending from 14 different countries and was packed with dozens of presentations from some of the top trainers in the country with live-fire courses in pistol, shotgun and rifle as well as several instructor and armorer certifications.

Attendee registration started on Sunday, May 20th, 2007 at the Omni Hotel in San Antonio and included a vendor expo that featured some of the top companies in the law enforcement firearms, products & training industry.

Team Spartan and DS Arms were on site with a full table display featuring some of DSA’s newest products, which included samples of their FAL SA58 rifle, SA58 carbine, SA58 OSW, DS-AR 5.56 rifle, the new Spartan 5.56 rifle and the Brugger & Thomet TP9SF 9mm sub-machinegun.

On Monday, May 21st, 2007 the conference started with an opening ceremony that included posting of the national and state colors, a welcome presentation by host agency personnel and introduction of newly elected IALEFI board member, Lieutenant Dennis Carroll of the Schaumburg Police Department. Congratulations Dennis! You worked hard for it and you earned it!

Then it was off to the range at Camp
Bullis where the live-fire vendor demo, memorial match and side match were held. The live-fire vendor demo area was packed as conference attendee’s test fired and evaluated the latest weapons from Beretta, Glock, Smith & Wesson, FN, Sig Sauer, Springfield Armory and DS Arms.

Team Spartan and the DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division sponsored this year’s side match where participants competed for 5 overall prizes using Brugger & Thomet TP9SF 9mm
sub-machineguns, provided by DS Arms. We had a total of 89 members compete in the match with the top 5 winners as follows:

1st Place – Carlos Chavez (186-1X) – EO Tech 511 Holographic Sight

2nd Place – Rickey Miller (183-1X) – Insight M3X Flashlight

3rd Place – D. Churillai (180-3X) – Surefire E2D Defender Flashlight

4th Place – Paul Trautmann (180-2X) – Surefire 6P Flashlight

5th Place – Garry Redding (178-3X) – DS Arms OSW Hat and T-shirt

A special thank you goes to side match co-sponsors Dave Selvaggio, President of DS Arms for providing the TP9 sub-machineguns for use in the match, George Brennan at Winchester for sponsoring the match ammunition and Jeff Brown from Law Enforcement Targets for sponsoring the targets for the match. Thank you for supporting IALEFI and helping us make this year's side match a huge success!

Monday concluded with the Annual IALEFI Memorial Match, which was sponsored by Sigarms this year. Competition was fierce as 120 attendees competed in three separate age brackets for the overall prize – a Sig Sauer Elite Series P226, valued at $1200.00!

For the second year in a row, a Team Spartan staff instructor has won the Memorial Match, with John Krupa winning the match as the overall winner this year!

The conference continued with class presentations from Tuesday through Friday, with instructors presenting dozens of world class training courses. During this time, Team Spartan staff instructors contributed by presenting the following Team Spartan and DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division courses:

Edged Weapons Defense – Instructor Development Course
Presented by staff instructors Aaron Cunningham and Sung Joo Lee.

DS Arms FAL SA58 Rifle Operator Course
Presented by staff instructors John Krupa and Vince Jamison.

DS Arms FAL SA58 Rifle Armorer Course
Presented by staff instructors Mike Keefe and Daniel Lombard.

The conference concluded with an awards banquet on Thursday, and class room presentations on Friday. DS Arms was once again able to generously donate an FAL SA58 rifle for this year's raffle, which generated donations in support of the IALEFI Scholarship Fund.

The winner of this year's raffle rifle is William Wright of the Belknap County Sheriff's Department in Laconia, New Hampshire. Congratulations on winning your new rifle!

IALEFI did it again by putting on one of their best conferences ever! If you missed this year’s conference, you definitely don’t want to miss the 28th Annual ATC coming up in Reno, Nevada in May of 2008! Start making plans to attend now and we’ll see you there!

Team Spartan is proud to announce the debut of 6 new training courses for 2007!

Team Spartan defensive tactics instructors Aaron Cunningham and Matt Little bring a series

of intensity driven Defensive Duty Knife Courses to life with reality based training in the

justifiable use and application of the law enforcement duty knife.

The Defensive Duty Knife Program is based on the internationally recognized Filipino martial art Tacosa Serrada Eskrima, a close quarter armed combatives system that has been integrated into emergency defensive use of the law enforcement duty knife. This program also focuses on legal issues and the justifiable use of the duty knife within the continuum of force.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

UPCOMING EVENTS
Illinois Police Association - Area Combat and Bullseye Matches

Team Spartan and the NSPPL are proud to announce the return of the Illinois Police Association (IPA) combat and bullseye matches in the Chicagoland area. After a several year hiatus due to the anti-gun political agenda of the Chicago Police Department banning IPA and NRA shooting sports events at Chicago Police Department city ranges, we have been able to revive these excellent

law enforcement firearms training events locally through a coordinated effort with our new host

agency, the Harvey Police Department.

The following dates have been scheduled for IPA sanctioned combat and bullseye matches at

the Harvey Police Department Range in Harvey, Illinois:

Top ranking shooters for each match will receive trophies, with the overall top 20 shooters of

the year receiving the State of Illinois - Governors Twenty Award at the end of the shooting

season. The 2007 IPA shooting season will conclude in October with the IPA Top Gun Match in

Pontiac, Illinois.

National Tactical Officers Association - Annual Training Conference

Team Spartan and the DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division are proud to announce that

we will have a vendor booth on display at the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA)

24th Annual Tactical Operations Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

September 16th – 21st, 2007.

The DS Arms Law Enforcement Training Division will also be presenting the

DS Arms FAL SA58 Rifle Armorer Course at this year’s conference as well as a live-fire weapons vendor demonstration of the SA58 rifle, SA58 OSW, DS-AR rifle and the Brugger & Thomet

TP9SF 9mm sub-machinegun. The armorers course will fill quickly, so be sure to stop by the

DS Arms vendor booth to register. Registration will be limited to 20 students.

The live-fire vendor display will be open to all conference participants that are interested in

test firing and evaluating DS Arms weapon systems. Be sure to stop by the DS Arms booth

early to register for the armorers class. We’ll see you at the conference.

Police Training Institute - 7th Annual Combat Challenge Match

The Police Training Institute will hold their 7th Annual Combat Challenge Match on

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 at the Tactical Training Center in Champaign, Illinois. This

match consists of 6 challenging courses of fire that you can re-shoot as many times as you like.

Your best scores are posted for ranking in each stage for trophies and prizes and your overall combined score is used to determine the Top Gun shooter for the match. The match consists

of 4 pistol stages, 1 carbine stage and 1 shotgun stage.

All long guns and long gun ammunition will be provided by PTI for the match. This is truly one

of the most exciting matches I have ever shot and I guarantee that you will find these courses

of fire challenging and fun! Plan on spending the whole day shooting and socializing with

officers from other agencies at this match, and bring lots of ammo!!!

3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Charity Match

Mark your calendars – the 3rd Annual Toys for Tots Combat Challenge Match is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, 2007 and will be hosted once again this year at the Harvey Police

Department Range in Harvey, Illinois.

We had over 180 participants from 10 different states compete in last years match, making it

the largest match of it’s kind in the country! We are expecting over 200 shooters for this years

match, and our goal is to collect 500 toys for 2007.

Last years event generated over 300 donated toys for the United States Marine Corps Reserves

Toys for Tots Toy Drive. We had over 70 sponsors donate 150 prizes valued at over

$15,000.00, which included 12 firearms as prizes.

The value of our prize table for 2007 will exceed last year’s, and we plan to have at least 15 firearms on the prize table for this year’s event! If you liked what you seen last year, this year’s event will be even bigger and better! There will be a larger vendor area, more prizes, more trophies and lots of shooting! Bring a friend and lots of toys!!!

In addition to running the Combat Challenge Match, we will also have several industry

sponsored side matches for participants to compete in. The matches will include:

  • Beretta Challenge – Pistol / carbine match on steel - Sponsored by Beretta
All 9mm pistols, carbines and frangible ammunition will be provided for this match.
  • Revenge of the Pepper Poppers – Pistol match on steel - Sponsored by Smith & Wesson
All 9mm M&P pistols and frangible ammunition will be provided for this match.
  • Shotgun Run – Shotgun match on steel - Sponsored by Team Spartan
All Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotguns and ammunition will be provided for this match.
  • Man vs. Man Steel Challenge – Pistol match on steel - Sponsored by Action Target

If you missed the last 2 matches we have run, you definitely don’t want to miss this year’s event!
